Hi, my name is Rachel Burge!
I graduated 10th in my class with a Bachelors Degree in Biology, a Minor in Business, Honor Graduate, Summa Cum Laude, Alphi Chi, Beta Beta Beta, Chi Alpha Sigma and Sigma Tau Delta. I am originally from New Zealand but have studied in the States for the past four years. I maintained a GPA of 3.94 throughout my undergraduate degree while competing as a colligate athlete, working, and being involved in extensive extracurricular activities.
However, it wasn’t always this way!!
My high school experience was very different! My education was very disrupted as I frequently moved around and had a lot of difficulties understanding topics, especially science, without help! I left school at 16, only to come back two years later and finish (barely) with a 2.5 GPA, and that was a struggle...
I did not even show up to my chemistry final because my teacher told me that I had no chance and that I would "just never understand chemistry." Having struggled academically for years, I was left feeling unprepared and scared to begin college.
Things changed when I started getting one on one help from my teachers; I couldn't believe what a world of a difference some quality time, better explanations and working with someone who didn’t make me feel stupid could do!
During my time as a Biology student, my love of science grew into a passion for helping others. I began student-tutoring in the Academic Resource Center. Tutoring pushed me to become a better student, and I loved passing on my knowledge, helping other students overcome challenges stemming from poor education or limited resources. Now I want to continue to help students of all ages and levels. I am passionate about providing tutoring that helps students feel confident in themselves and their abilities.
I want studies to be made simple!
Long term, I would love to gain both a Ph.D. and an MD, so I can further both my research and clinical understanding of human physiology and contribute to advancing therapeutic drug strategies. I have been offered a full ride to start a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the Medical Univesity of South Carolina starting in August, 2020.
